A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
