The Black Phone
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a continuation. Located in the late 70s in Denver, a series of disappearances has made the local kids frightened. However, the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals commence monetising the nation's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, yet Chastain succeeds to depict Tammy Faye with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4
